Meet Josephine Sarfo: A Trailblazer in Midwifery Education in Ghana

Josephine Sarfo is a registered midwife in Ghana, dedicated to advancing midwifery education and maternal healthcare, in both teaching and practice. She holds two separate Masters: an MSc in Midwifery, Maternal, and Newborn Health from the University of Nottingham, UK, (2023), and an MSc in Population and Reproductive Health from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, Ghana (2022). Additionally, she earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Education, Winneba (2022), and a BSc in Midwifery from Garden City University College, GCUC, Kumasi, (2017). In February 2024, she was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Christian Service University (CSU), Kumasi, where she continues to inspire and shape the next generation of midwives.

Before joining CSU, she served as a clinical instructor at the Department of Midwifery, GCUC, from 2018 to 2020. Following that, she worked as a Midwifery Officer at Ho Polyclinic, gaining valuable hands-on experience in maternal and newborn care.

Her research interests encompass respectful maternal care, midwifery education, evidence-based practice, and adolescent reproductive health. Her recent dissertation, currently under review for publication, is an Exploratory Qualitative Systematic Review of Midwives’ Perspectives on Supporting Women’s Choices Regarding Alternative Birth Positions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Josephine Sarfo is deeply involved in community service through maternal and newborn health advocacy. She educates mothers on reproductive health, family planning, and safe childbirth practices. She also mentors midwifery students in clinical settings, ensuring they acquire hands-on experience in delivering quality maternal healthcare. Through her dedication, she continues to make a meaningful impact on both maternal health outcomes and the future of midwifery in Ghana.

She is a proud member of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, and a committed member of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Lighthouse Congregation.
