The Vice President, Rev. Dr. Peter White has expressed concerns about current challenges facing private tertiary institutions in the country. He was addressing the 43rd Matriculation Ceremony organized for the January stream of students of Christian Service University College for the 2018/2019 Academic year. He emphasized the need for ‘a broader consultation of Private Universities was holistic to address the many challenges facing their operations, i.e. financial constraints and low fraction of students’ admissions recorded in recent times.
Dr. White held that other factors like high cost of accreditation and affiliation fees charged by mentor institutions add up to the recent collapse of private university colleges in the Country which were detrimental to the growth of education.
He therefore pleaded with the government to see the call as urgent, more especially, in the light of the current free Senior High School policy which would soon produce graduates which cannot be absorbed by the public universities.
He further charged policy makers to factor these concerns with the mindset that ‘without sustainable private universities, public universities alone could not absorb these graduates to give them tertiary education’.
Meanwhile the Vice President charged the matriculates to uphold the core values of the College and see their Student’s Hand Book as bibles to guide their steps.
He also advised the freshmen to focus on the many positives that I.C.T presents and do away with all forms of social vices that hinder their education.
Bibles were presented to the freshmen to drive their focus to reflect the sacred purpose of Christian education which is represented in the mission statement of the University College.
In all, 115 students were officially admitted to various undergraduates programmes of the University College while the ceremony marked the 1st matriculation for students who were admitted to the Master of Science in Corporate Planning programme.
