Undergraduate students of the Department of Planing and Development at the Christian Service University College, Kumasi embarked on a 3-day data-gathering mission to households and institutions in some communities of the Bosomtwe District including Jachie and Pramso on the dynamics of Urbanization.
The team which comprised of level 200 to 400 students interviewed heads of households and Institutions to identify issues and prevailing conditions in the selected communities, measures to address the challenges that confront their social development.
According to Dr. Kwasi Osei Agyeman, Head of Planning Department, students would be assisted to analyse the data to identify the dynamics of Urbanization on the social development of these communities, and they are expected to offer recommendations based on the data analyzed to meet planning standards.
He indicated that the exercise formed part of the academic work for the semester to equip students with practical skills in the application of basic concepts and principles of social development. “Students’ analytical and problem-solving skills are sharpened as this course takes them through the basic principles of identifying societal issues and challenges, and finding solutions to them,” he said.
Meanwhile, he added that the final assessment of the project would be based on group presentations to a panel of examiners for the award of marks to the students at the end of the semester.
Dr. Agyeman maintained that the semester-based field-trip continues to be “a core aspect of the Planning Workshop Course” which prepares and boosts the scholarly careers of all students for their BA Planning and Social Development programme at the University College.
