Faculty of Christian Service University College (CSUC) have been introduced to the concept of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. This student-centred approach to learning is geared at creating real-life solutions to problems of industry and the wider society.
Prof. William Oduro, the Dean of International Student Programmes Office of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Coordinator for the PBL seminar, said this approach will solve the problems students often encounter in learning using traditional methods such as memorisation and note-taking.
This learning approach motivates and activates students to access current information using ICTs. They will be able to translate theory to practice and be relevant to industry and society.
The students will get to appreciate the objectives for the course being taught and take responsibility for applying them to solve the problems of the area they find themselves in.
“The essence of learning is to transform information to new knowledge and transfer the knowledge to new applications that will solve problems. In PBL, we learn to learn,” said Prof. Oduro.
PBL when effectively implemented by lecturers will reduce the spate of graduate unemployment, in that graduates will not be at the mercy of employers because they can create their own jobs and be relevant in the society.
The Vice President of CSUC, Prof. Stephen Emmanuel Owusu, encouraged lecturers to embrace the PBL concept and implement it as CSUC endeavours, through teaching and learning to transform society. The seminar was also patronised by library, ICT and other administrative staff of the University College.
