Department Of Physician Assistantship (PA) Studies – Medical

Congratulations for choosing Physician Assistant as your career!

The Physician Assistantship Studies program at Christian Service University College (CSUC) will provide you with
the academic knowledge and clinical skills you need to pass licensure examination and, to obtain your license and
begin to work as a registered Physician Assistant.

You will be required over the next three or four years (depending on your level of entry) to work diligently and
conscientiously in order to meet the program objectives and achieve your goal. As you make your way through the
PA education, striving and sacrificing, please take time to remind yourself often that you have been selected for
one of the finest academic programmes and that you can and will meet each challenge successfully, and be rewarded
beyond measures for your efforts.

The CSUC Physician Assistant Programme is under the mentorship of University of Cape Coast, and has collaboration
with some accredited and established District Hospitals, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

Programme Aims
The programme aims to prepare its graduates to practice and promote primary health care of the highest quality as
part of a healthcare team of different shades of professionals and competencies.

Programme Objectives
i. To demonstrate broad knowledge and skills across the different facets of clinical medicine, including medical
knowledge, inter-personal and communication skills, patient care, professionalism and ethics, problem based-learning,
community and systems-based practice.

ii. To demonstrate knowledge on the history, central concepts, and evolution of the PA profession, including scope
of practice, applicable laws, rules, and regulations concerning the practice of medicine; and the role of the PA
as a member of healthcare team in a variety of healthcare settings.

iii. To assess patients across all age groups, in acute and chronic conditions.

iv. To show adeptness in taking histories and physical examinations, requesting, obtaining and interpreting
diagnostic tests, performing medical and some surgical procedures and; Develop versatility in the use of both
pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options.

v. To demonstrate managerial skills and the application of information Technology (IT).

Uniqueness and Justification of the Programme
The programme aims at empowering them within ethical and legal framework of knowledge and practice of PA, through
life-long learning for professional excellence and invaluable service to society. The PA training has strong
emphasis on clinically-based training that will prepare students to begin patient care immediately upon graduation.

Career Prospects
PA professionals will be equipped with the knowledge and skills that will enable them work, depending on the
healthcare setting to which they are posted. Potential areas include;
1. Public hospitals
2. Polyclinics
3. Health centres
4. Private medical centres
5. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s)
6. Faith-based clinics
7. Public corporations schools
8. Research institutions and Donor groups and;
9. Outreach clinics.

Entry Requirements
For SSCE Candidates: Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects,including English and
Mathematics, and three (3) elective subjects. The elective subjects include Chemistry, Physics, Biology or
Mathematics.

For WASSCE Candidates: Credit passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including
English and Mathematics, and three (3) elective subjects. The elective subjects include Chemistry, Physics,
Biology or Mathematics.

A-Level Applicants: Candidates must have credits in at least five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects including English
language and Mathematics, and three (3) passes at the ‘A’ Level in Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Mathematics.
Applicants should have a pass in General Paper.

Graduates
Holders of BSc in the life sciences (Nursing – Practicing, Human Biology, Biological Sciences) with at least three
(3) years on–the –job experience are eligible. Holders of Diploma in Nursing with five (5) years working experience
are also eligible. This category of applicants would be selected pending their passing an interview. These students
will be admitted at Level 200. Other BSc. Degree holders who want to pursue the programme shall be admitted to
Level 100.
