Dr Abena Abaitey joins 15 PhD Holders at CSU

Christian Service University, proudly announces its latest distinguished faculty member, Dr Abena Korang Acheampong Abaitey. She is currently the 4th female to join 15 existing PhD Holders across the four faculties of the University.

Specialized in Urban Informality and Community Development, Dr. Abena Abaitey earned her PhD in Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), with the dissertation titled: ‘Sustainable Solid Waste Management focusing on Informal Waste Service Providers in Kumasi, Ghana (see: DOI –10.1080/13549839.2025.2450508 ISSN: 1469-6711).

Her groundbreaking research tackles Ghana’s pressing waste management challenges, focusing on integrating informal waste service providers (IWSPs) into Kumasi’s formal system. Her study highlights the pivotal role of IWSPs in waste collection, environmental sustainability, and livelihoods while addressing the infrastructural and social challenges they face. By proposing a comprehensive integration framework, Dr. Abaitey’s work offers practical solutions to enhance inclusivity and drive sustainable solid waste management in urban Ghana.

She is a member of the Academia Researchers, a member of the CEFE International, and a soon-to-be member of the Ghana Institute of Planners. She has attended and facilitated several conferences and training workshops both locally and internationally, including Grant Research Proposal Writing and Research Publication at CSU, Systematic Reviews for Capacity Building, KNUST, Local Economic Development of GIZ, South Africa, and Sustainable Urban Land Use Planning of the World Bank Institute.

Dr. Abaitey comes with over 20 years of lectureship experience in the Planning Department, with extensive community service at CSU, and is committed to mentoring and supporting her faculty and students’ development.

Her journey from a first degree to a PhD in Planning reflects her steadfast dedication, focus, and resilience. Balancing her roles as a mother, wife, and academician, Dr. Abaitey attributes her success to hard work, consistency, and God’s faithfulness. She exemplifies the spirit of excellence and service in academia.

Dr Abaitey is married with three children, is a staunch Christian, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Lay Reader in the Methodist Church of Ghana.
